Who is MRTY?
Cartooning 4 Kids started back in June of 2014 as a small pet project to help teach my kids how to draw. At the time I was working full-time in the video game industry and didn't have much time to spend with the family at home. I was often working long hours or on business travel. My hope was to be able to entertain and teach my kids about art remotely, so I set up a camera in the back seat of my car, pulled out a pad of paper and a pen and started drawing. Each video I recorded was uploaded to my Youtube page which I called Cartooning 4 Kids...referring to my own kids. :)
Several videos later I realized that others were taking interest in my tutorials. 1 view became 100, then 1,000, and so on. Eventually my content library grew as well as my followers. By the time the Christmas holidays came around I was sitting at 1,000 enthusiastic subscribers. It was at this moment I realized what the future held for me, my family and my career.
My plan was to continue creating and sharing new videos each and every day. To this very day I have not missed one upload. I set my sights on growing to 100,000 subscribers and to hoist the Silver Play button. Seemed like an impossible goal at the time but this was something I was determined to do.
In the summer of 2016 I made the decision to become a full time Youtuber and to retire from the gaming industry. This new lifestyle allowed me to spend each and every waking moment with my family. Fast forward to today and I have zero regrets of my decision. I put family first, married it with my passion for the arts and focused on something I love.
I believe art is an essential part of growing up. It's a vital communication tool that has helped me express my feelings and emotions as a young child. My family moved around from city to city so it was difficult for me to develop strong friendships. I was often the victim to bullying. My only escape was to place myself in a space that allowed me to dream and create my own world. That space came in the form of a small cardboard box- just big enough for me to sit inside with my paper and pens.
So, why the helmet you ask? It's a symbol of my childhood. It's my cardboard box. My place to dream. And my Youtube channel is where anyone who shares that same passion for the arts can have a peek inside.
With love and gratitude,
MRTY
